Iris got her cast off on Monday. When the doctor went to cut it off, I braced myself in anticipation of stashed gummy bears falling onto the floor, as it broke apart. Dodged that bullet. There was nothing. Not even part of a ham sandwich.
The doctor told me that if she didn't start to walk within the next three weeks that I should bring her back for therapy. My response: "Excuse me? Did you say three hours or three weeks?" To which she slapped me again with, "That would be three weeks." I didn't expect that. Iris had started to walk pretty confidently over the last week in her cast. Now taking it off has been a major set back.
However, Iris's strength has already improved immensely since Monday: she can now stand unsupported and she takes little baby steps with her left foot and drags her right leg along to catch up, all on her own. The orthopedist did X-ray her leg and declared the fracture completely healed, but explained that her muscles on the right side have really weakened. So we are taking it very slowly here.
Iris's first request after cast removal? To take a warm bath and wear footy pajamas all day.
Here is a reunion photo of left foot and right! And now for the greatest challenge of all, which I've honestly been too overwhelmed to mention thus far: a return to the daily task of finding TWO matching socks. Wish me luck.

Hurray Iris! You look great! Love, Aunt Karen
